Margaret Sanger opened the first birth control clinic. Located in Brownsville, Brooklyn, her clinic was deemed illegal under the “Comstock Laws” which forbade birth control. Sanger believed the best way to change a law was to break it. The later organizations that she founded evolved into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
