Located in South Africa, the Orange Free State has existed as an independent republic from 1854 until Britain's victory in the Second Boer War. President Martinus Theunis Steyn, who had fled Bloemfontein in March, will claim control over the unoccupied areas of the state until surrendering in 1902. Adding an area of 48,326 square miles (125,200 km2) to the Empire, the area is renamed the Orange River Colony. The colony will become part of the Union of South Africa in 1910.
