One invention to come about during the Industrial Revolution was in 1802 when British engineer Richard Trevithick developed the first fully-functioning steam locomotive to be used on railway tracks.

Railways had been used for around seventy years up to this point with horse-drawn carts, but now with a steam-powered engine, large amounts of cargo could be moved further and faster. Over the next few decades, the steam locomotive would be improved upon, made more efficient, and standardized that by the 1830s, steam train railways could be found throughout the United Kingdom, United States, and Continental Europe.
