The Great Depression started when the stock market crashed in 1929 due to the Smoot-Hawlet Tariff. It lasted more than a decade and was one of the worst economic crises in modern hsitory. The causes of the Great Depression included slowing consumer demand, mounting consumer debt, decreased industrial production and the rapid and reckless expansion of the U.S. stock market
