On July 21, 1942, WAVES was established. Many Puerto Rican women were recruited into WAVES, a military unit that consisted of women volunteers. Their primary role was to fill up non-combat required duties such as aviation units, hospital, or clerical jobs so that the officers and men can fight overseas.
