11 Apr 1898 Jahr - US declares war
against Spain
Beschreibung:
Observing President McKinley's reluctance to enter this war, it appears the U.S. didn't have a good reason for going to war. The Jingoes shout of; "Remember The Maine, to hell with Spain," hardly seems convincing. U.S. casualties include 500 battle deaths and 5,000 deaths from tropical disease. Notably, Dr. Walter Reed identified the stegomyia mosquito as the carrier of yellow fever, a discovery that led to success in building the Panama Canal. Territorially, the U. S. acquired Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico and at minimum, paternalistic relationship to the Philippines and Cuba. The Spanish American War did not cause the U.S. to become a world power, but more accurately demonstrated the U.S. as a (future) world power.
