Perhaps no other U.S. President has risen so high on the world stage and fallen so low, so quickly, as Woodrow Wilson. Wilson was the toast of Paris on the eve of the Conference, which began in January 1919, a little over a month after the end of hostilities in Europe. His greatest mistake was refusing to work out some kind of compromise with Republicans in the Senate before negotiating with the European powers. In the end, the U.S. never did sign the Treaty of Versailles because Senators Lodge, Borah and dozens of others were unwilling to agree to the League of Nations. Isolationist and irreconcilable, they felt the covenant would limit U.S. sovereignty and the U.S. would be dragged into other armed conflicts in Europe against its will.
