7 Jul 1775 Jahr - Olive Branch Petition
Beschreibung:
The Olive Branch Petition was America’s final effort to persuade Britain to give them a say in parliament and to be treated as citizens of the British Empire. This appeal from the Continental Congress spoke directly to King George III, urging him to reconcile the relationship between the British government and prevent a war from starting. This letter was written masterfully by John Dickinson, who expressed the colonists’ dislike of the treatment that they were getting from the government so as to say that they still want to be part of the British Empire, but we want equal rights too. In this way, John Dickinson said that the colonists didn’t want to start a revolution, and only wanted a say in the government. Unfortunately, King George refused the Olive Branch Petition, this failed treaty marks that the colonies really didn’t want to split away from Britain, and they gave the king many chances to fix his mistakes, before declaring independence and fighting for freedom.
