On July 10, 1943, the Allied forces started their attack on Italy, attacking the island of Sicily. After landing and receiving very little resistance, it was easy to land troops on the island because of this so within three days there were 150,000 Allied troops on the island. On August 17, the island was taken over by the Allied forces. In Rome, the Allied conquest of Sicily, led to the collapse of Mussolini’s government. Early in the morning of July 25, he was forced to resign by the Fascist Grand Council and was arrested later that day. On July 26, Marshal Pietro Badoglio assumed control of the Italian government. The new government quickly entered into secret negotiations with the Allied forces, even though there were numerous German troops present in Italy. On September 3, the Allied started their invasion of mainland Italy and because of this, the Italian Government decided to surrender to Allied forces.
