-As communism fell in Eastern Europe, issues in the Soviet Union began to deteriorate
-some communists tried to take over Gorbachev to keep control, but it failed
-ended with: former republics gaining independence, Russia developed as a representative democracy, and US relationship with Russia continued to develop positively
