The territories of Alaska were purchased from the Russian Empire by the United States, and the Department of Alaska was established by America to govern over the territory. The territory was deemed useless by the Russian Empire, but later in history, the US found many oil deposits in the territory, making it a large place for natural resource extraction in the US. A speech made by Hon. Leonard Myers was made in 1868 in the House of Representatives, in which he said "yet undeveloped it is true, but immense in its resources and extent..." (Myers, 1), where essentially Myers is describing to the House the region.
