The Germans try to break the stalemate on the Western front by the first in European history, using chemical gases. The Chlorine gas forced Allied troops to abandon their trenches. However, the Germans did not have enough reserves to advance.

The battle caused manufacturers to supply soldiers with gas masks as more and more countries started using chemical weapons.
