The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States of America. It was adopted by the Continental Congress on November 15, 1777, but it wasn’t ratified until March 1, 1781. The first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation was Virginia, which ratified it on December 16, 1777, and the last state to ratify this constitution was Maryland, which refused until February 2, 1781. This constitution created a conglomerate of strong state governments and a weak central government. There were many problems with this document, first and foremost, the states could basically say no to anything the central government told them to do. If the central government asked for more troops to join the army, they couldn’t force them to join, they would have to ask them nicely, and they didn’t actually have to send any. The Articles of Confederation were scrapped and replaced by the current United States Constitution on March 4, 1789.
