14 Mai 1779 Jahr - The Betrayal of Benedict Arnold
Beschreibung:
It has never been clear why Benedict Arnold betrayed the Continental Army, but since his betrayal, his name has become synonymous with treason. When he formally betrays the colonies, he meets with a British officer, Major John Andre. He was offered 20,000 British pounds to let the British army take West Point. Only a month after their meeting, Major John Andre was discovered by militiamen while he was trying to escape from American soil. He was executed for espionage not long after. Benedict Arnold was able to escape on the HMS Vulture, but many blamed him for the death of Major John Andre. He was awarded the title of Brigadier General in the British Army and he led forces into both Virginia and Connecticut. When Benjamin Franklin wrote to Marquis de Lafayette about the betrayal of Benedict Arnold, he compared Arnold to Judas and said it was a “miserable bargain, especially when one considers the quantity of infamy he has acquired to himself and entailed on his family.”
