Cause: Influenced by Nat Turner's Slave Rebellion, Thomas did research on Turner's life and evem went to the jailhouse where Turner was being held to interview him.

Effect: Gave an insight into Nat Turner's mind and allowed readers to see a different emotion towards slavery.
