17 Sept 1862 Jahr - The Battle of Antietam Took Place In Western Maryland
Beschreibung:
The Battle of Antietam, “The Bloodiest Battle of the American Civil War,” took place on September 17, 1862 in Sharpsburg Maryland. The Union was lead by George B. McClellen and had around 87,000 forces engaged. The Confederacy was led by Robert E. Lee and had around 45,000 forces engaged. The battle happened after the Confederate States of American tried to invade the Union. After this invasion was deemed not as planned, Robert E. Lee and his troups went to the Antietam Creek. This repositioning was strategic because of the large open fields and hills the creek traveled around. The battle lasted for hours, and after a final attack the Confederates were driven away. There were three major assaults in the battle, and this was the nail on the coffin. The Union suffered 12,401 casualties and the Confederacy suffered 10,316 casualties. The Union’s victory was influential as Abreham Lincoln was given the oppurtunity to announce the Emancipation Proclamation. https://www.battlefields.org/learn/civil-war/battles/antietam https://www.nps.gov/articles/a-short-overview-of-the-battle-of-antietam.htm#:~:text=Most%20importantly%2C%20Union%20victory%20at,of%20the%20American%20Civil%20War.
