12 Apr 1861 Jahr - Confederate Guns Open Fire On Fort Sumter

Beschreibung:

On April 12, 1861, at 4;30 A.M. the American Civil War officially started when Confederate Soldiers opened fire on Fort Sumter. This attack was mainly caused by the location of the fort, which was in Charleston, South Carolina. Before the attack, South Carolina seceded from the Union; the fort was controlled by the Union. During the battle, the Union was heavily outnumbered, outsupplied, and outgunned. There was a total of 580 soldiers in the battle, 500 belonged to the Confederacy and 80 belonged to the Union. This battle lasted for nearly 36 hours, when a shell hit a flag pole bringing the Union’s colors to the ground, it was raised again. After a long and un-costly battle, the Confederates fired hotshots into the undersupplied fort, burning the building inside the fort. With no supplies, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter to the Confederate Soldiers. This battle had only two casualties. This was during the 100-gun salute when an explosive prematurely went off killing Pvt. Daniel Hough and mortally injuring another soldier.
