Beschreibung:
In the midst of the pandemic, in late May 2020, protests erupted in the United States and across the world. The long campaign against police brutality, which Black Lives Matter had reignited in 2012, surged with renewed intensity when an African American man named George Floyd was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Floyd’s killing was captured on video and followed soon after the killing of three other African Americans nationwide — two by police (in Louisville, Kentucky, and Tallahassee, Florida), and a third by neighborhood vigilantes in Georgia. As the video of Floyd’s killing circulated around the world on social media, massive rallies and protest marches followed. The street actions spread quickly from Minneapolis and other major American cities to cities across the globe such as London and Paris, as well as major cities in Brazil, Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, and in dozens of other countries worldwide. With the support of millions of people, marching and chanting across the country and world, protestors renewed calls for reform of policing and the criminal justice system.

Protests against Police Brutality and Racial Bias
On June 3, 2020, protesters at Black Lives Matter protest in New York City held up signs and a portrait of George Floyd, who had been asphyxiated while under arrest in Minneapolis. Protests against police brutality and bias erupted across the country in the wake of Floyd’s death.
Most protestors hold placards with text, "Black Lives Matter." Some of them hold signs that read, "Prosecute and Defund Police" and "Justice for George Floyd." A few people hold George Floyd portrait.
As this textbook goes to press, the 2020 presidential election lies just ahead, its outcome yet unknown, and the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, the protests inspired by George Floyd’s death continue in major American cities as well. Together, the outcomes of the election, the battle against the coronavirus, and the renewed calls for reform of policing practices, among other events unfolding at this writing, will constitute their own historical turning point, from which new developments will unfold.
