The scandal began when five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic Party offices on June 17, 1972, and ended with President Richard Nixon resigning from office in 1974. It was a major polarizing event, as it resulted in vast political division and a negative impact on public opinion of the government. The Republican Party was very divided on the issue, with some members of the party calling for Nixon's impeachment. Members of the Democratic Party called for Nixon's prosecution. The public was also extremely distraught, and a large distrust of the government and politicians created a gap between the American public and the political elite.
