Filipinos wanted independence. They thought they would get it like Cuba did, but the US was like nahh. US = delusional and thought US control of the Philippines was beneficial to Filipinos.

1899) Insurrection erupted. Led by Aguinaldo. The US deploys 70,000 troops to end the rebellion about freedom (ironic).

Filipino rebels hid in jungles and used guerrilla warfare. US public opinion shifts from Filipinos = innocent + needing help to Filipinos = dangerous. This shift contributed to US troops using overly harsh tactics (“water cure” = toture tactic, shoving water down victim’s throats until they gave information or died).

The US ended most of the rebellion when they infiltrated a guerrilla camp and captured Aguinaldo.

4,234 Americans died and over 600,000 Filipinos died.

William Taft became civil governor of Philippines 1901. The US then spends millions on improving roads, sanitation, and health. They tried to make English a second language.

All of this was ill-received by many Filipinos. They just wanted freedom. Many Filipinos immigrated to US. The Philippines get freedom 1946.
