4 Feb 1678 Jahr - Danby's For High Treason
Beschreibung:
Danby, was impeached by the House of Commons in 1678 on charges of high treason for his alleged involvement in the French Plot, a conspiracy to bring French troops into England to aid in a Catholic takeover of the government. Danby, who was the Lord High Treasurer and one of Charles II's closest advisors, was accused of accepting bribes from France and of trying to secure funds from the French king to support the King's policy of religious toleration
Danby was subsequently arrested and held in the Tower of London for five years while his impeachment trial continued in the House of Lords. However, the case against him ultimately collapsed due to lack of evidence, and he was released in 1684.
