It worked as a congress for the nation. Its objectives were that the representatives of the different states would recognize the sovereignty of the people, proclaim the independence of the United Provinces and write a constitution that would define the institutional system of the new state. Although these last two purposes were not met, the assembly established a significant number of reforms in the Río de la Plata institutions and, among other measures, established the celebration of May 25 as a civic holiday, eliminated the image of Ferdinand VII (King of Spain) from coins and official documents, declared the principle of the sovereignty of the people, ordered the composition of a national anthem, abolished the titles of nobility, abolished the Inquisition, abolished the practice of torture and proclaimed freedom of the press, etc.
