In the 1950s, my paternal great-grandfather immigrated to the United States, as did many of my great-uncles and aunts, who came to work in the U.S. for several months before returning to Guanajuato for part of the year. I had the privilege of meeting my great-grandfather when he was quite old and had the opportunity to discuss his life in the U.S. with him. He told me that he had worked in agriculture in the Salinas Valley, specifically Watsonville, but only for a brief period, as he preferred to live in Mexico. One fascinating thing I discovered was that my great-grandfather and other family members always immigrated together to the U.S. as a means of maintaining unity in a new habitus.
