This event marks a different approach to my family’s immigration history, as my maternal grandfather who immigrated during the 1980s was able to obtain residency and also become a U.S. citizen later on. IRCA allowed my grandfather to be a documented immigrant and also a sense of relief from the fear of deportation. An important note, on this event, is that many other family members had the opportunity to obtain legal status but were unsure whether to trust institutions and opted out. It is interesting to hear about my grandfather’s perspective and other family members who lived much of their life in fear of families being separated.
