The My Lai massacre is still considered one of the worst acts of the US military*. Using "search and destroy" methods, the US came across the village of My Lai in an attempt to eradicate the Viet Cong. But there were no Viet Cong, only peasants and civilians. The US military didn't care. They pounced on civilians, shot them as they fled, and did not fight back. Between 300 and 400 civilians, including women and children, were massacred. All were unarmed. Not only that, many women were raped before their murders.
The troops were only stopped because a helicopter landed between them and threatened to fire on them if they continued.
This is important because it was one of the worst acts ever committed by the military and helped infuriate the American public and stir anti-war sentiment.
