Beschreibung:
The Black Lives Matter Movement – a significantly uniting movement since the civil rights movement – is an international activist movement started by an African American community. The importance of the BLM movement is to help fight the systematic oppression of black people as well as stop the racism, police brutality and murder targeted towards the black individual.
The Black Lives Matter Movement started in the summer of 2013 when George Zimmerman – a white police officer – was acquitted after shooting and killing the 17-year-old African American Trayvon – who was wearing a hoodie as well as carrying skittles and a drink – Martin in Miami Gardens, Florida. The killer George Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin out of self-defense. The Black Lives Matter movement started thus right after in support of Trayvon and his family.
The effect that the BLM movement has is mostly in part due to social media platforms and influence. The hash tag “#BlackLivesMatter” began appearing all over social media. Alicia Garza is credited for inspiring the slogan after the acquittal of George Zimmerman as she posted on Facebook: “Black people. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter.”. Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza – three African American female activists – are the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement.
From its start in 2013 the movement has become and international organization which people from around the world can take part in. Nowadays people from all over can organize and march in the name of BLM.
