12 Jan 2010 Jahr - Earthquake in Haiti exacerbated infectious diseases
Beschreibung:
Immediately following the earthquake, trauma injuries were the most pressing medical concern, but the focus shifted to follow-up care for patients who had undergone surgery, as well as basic primary healthcare services, such as services for maternal-child health and chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, HIV, and tuberculosis, among others. TB is a particular concern, as care for many of the 3,000 patients who were receiving treatment prior to the earthquake has been disrupted.
Cases of acute respiratory infections, acute diarrheal disease, and tetanus have been reported in the absence of an epidemic. The rainy season raises the risk of childhood diseases like acute respiratory infections and diarrhea, as well as vector-borne diseases like malaria.
