The Polynesians invented surfing in the 12th century. Originally surfing was called wave sliding. once the Polynesians came to the Hawaiian islands surfing gained popularity. In cave paintings, we can infer surfing was a sport only for royalty. The first surfboards weighed 100 lbs. and were 15 feet long.
