After hearing that Atahualpa was headed towards Cuzco, Pizarro and his men marched towards Cajamarca, hoping to catch up with him. When they arrived on the 14th November, they discovered that they had.

When Atahualpa met with Pizarro, he invited the Spanish to meet him outside the city. There, he gave them a customary welcome of maize beer in golden cups. However, the Spanish tried to intimidate them by throwing away the drinks and riding their horses. Atahualpa ordered any Incas who showed fear to be killed.

Later, Atahualpa invited the Spanish to meet him in Cajamarca's Great Square. They were to be given lodgings in his palace. The Spanish arrived early and hid around the square. When thousands of Incas arrived, carrying Atahualpa to his throne, Pizarro sent Friar Vicente to give the Inka a copy of the Bible. Atahualpa asked if the Christian God was better than his gods, before throwing the book on the floor. Pizarro refused to allow them to be against Christianity, so ordered his men to open fire on the crowd. 2000 were killed and thousands more injured. Atahualpa was taken prisoner.

Even after this, the Spanish continued to pursue the Incas to Atahualpa's camp, killing many more and stealing many riches.
