1 Jan 1963 Jahr - Early 1963: The Titan II deployed by the United States.

Beschreibung:

The Titan II was declared operational and deployed in early 1963. This was the largest missile ever deployed by the United States. The missile was classified as an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile and was 102 feet in length and 10 feet in diameter. Designed to carry nuclear warheads, it was one of the most advanced missiles of its time, with a range of over 9,000 miles and a speed of more than 15,000 miles per hour. The Titan II was developed as part of the US military's efforts to maintain nuclear power against Russia. The Titan II was a two-stage missile, powered by a liquid-fueled engine. Its first stage used a pair of Aerojet LR-87 engines, which burned a combination of kerosene and liquid oxygen to produce over 430,000 pounds of thrust. The second stage used a single LR-91 engine, which burned a combination of nitrogen tetroxide and Aerozine 50 to produce over 100,000 pounds of thrust. The missile was equipped with sophisticated guidance systems, including an inertial guidance system and a star tracker, which enabled it to hit its targets with a high degree of accuracy. The Titan II remained in service until 1987, when it was retired and replaced by newer missile systems. This missile was important for the United States because it allowed them to prove to other countries that they were powerful as well and it was also a very advanced weapon for that time.
