Beschreibung:

1875-1955

Mary was the daughter of slaves, and was educated thanks to the push to educate slaves after the Civil War. She was an active member of her church, and she felt God's call to become a missionary to the continent of Africa. The mission agency, however, told her that they did not need Black women as missionaries in Africa.

Gladys then purported other avenues of service, becoming an important figure in Franklin Rosevelt's cabinet. She was also appointed by Harry Truman to serve on the forming council for the United Nations. She served as Vice-President of the NAACP until her death.
