Cause: Thomas Edison created the lightbulb to provide a steady light for the miners with a low risk of explosion. This was needed because the tunnels that workers had to crawl through were dark and nothing could be seen. This could risk explosions and people could get injured. As miners only used candles as a way to see the tunnels, it slowed down the production of coal and could not keep up with the demands.

Effect: The invention of the electric lightbulb led to multiple improvements to the economy and well as society. While people continued to mine, the light bulb allowed miners to safely scavenge for coal with lower risks of explosions and fires. Not only did the lightbulb improve the productivity of mining for coal, it allowed for more inventions to occur. In addition to safer and faster coal production, food was able to be produced through factories with the usage of electric lights. In this way, food was able to be stored for a long period of time before expiring. Additionally, healthcare benefitted from the lightbulb as well as surgeries were done with better lighting. This allowed for doctors and surgeons to have a clearer view on the problems they were trying to remove.

Significance: This led to the exchange of new ideas because it allowed people to work even more efficiently. With this technology, people were able to branch off and create even more ways of productivity later on. As the lightbulb became more popular, working became safer, more inventions with the use of electricity occurred which overall led to living a better life. In addition to this, the light bulb helped people share ideas because it allowed people to work longer days. They were able to get more things done, with more pay as well as more innovations.
