23 Aug 1939 Jahr - German - Soviet Non-Agression pact

Beschreibung:

On the night of the 23 - 24 August 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non - aggression pact, also known as the Molotov - Ribbentrop pact.
The Soviet Union was previously unable to reach an agreement with France or Britain against Nazi Germany, and in the prospect of resisting German Expansion alone, they decided to approach Germany. The Soviets kept negotiating with France and Britain; however, Josef Stalin eventually decided to reach an agreement with Germany.
Both countries agreed that they would not attack each other and divided the countries that lay between them. Germany took Western Poland and part of Lithuania, and the Soviet Union was going to claim Eastern Poland and part of Finland.
The Soviets hoped to buy time to build up their forces to face German Expansionism, and Germany wanted to proceed with its invasion of Poland and other countries around it without having to worry about the Soviets.
Nine days after its signing, Germany began World War Two by invading Poland, and a couple of days later the Soviets invaded Poland from the East.
The Pact was eventually discarded when Germany attacked the Soviet Union on the 22nd June 1941, after it had invaded much of Western and Central Europe.
