1 Jan 1918 Jahr - Weimar Republic
Beschreibung:
The Weimar republic was an official name given to the German government between the end of the imperial period (1918-1933).
The Weimar Republic draws its name from the town of Weimar in central Germany where the constitutional assembly met.
It was following the devastation of the first world war, Germany was exhausted and sued for peace in desperate circumstances. Awareness of imminent defeat sparked a revolution. Apart from the United States which extended the right to vote in 1920, the Weimar consitution extended the right to vote for all men and women over the age of 20 in 1919.
It also provided for a popularity elected president who was given considerable power over foreign policy and armed force.
Some disadvantages of the Weimar Republic was the difficulty for one party to gain majority therefore the country was run by a series of coalitions (governments led by different parties working together). As a result, all the governments were less stable and there was a fall back of decisive action.
