3 Okt 1857 Jahr - Gradual Civilization Act
Beschreibung:
"An Act to Encourage the Gradual Civilization of the Indian Tribes in the Province" was passed by the Province of Canada. "The Gradual Civilization Act," as it came to be known, was part of an effort to use government policy to assimilate Indigenous peoples to the customs of European settler society. Under the Act, a debt-free, “educated Indian,” who was of “good moral character,” could apply for a land grant from the federal government.
The Gradual Civilization Act has been heavily criticized for its inherent racism and coercive nature. The act treated the aboriginals as children, and the federal and provincial governments of Canada forged onward with their expansive agenda with little regard for the first nations people.
