Washington Irving wrote a biography about Columbus and made up that everybody thought that the world was round and that Columbus proved that idea wrong. The truth is, everybody knew that the world was round by observing the ever-present horizon. Nobody thought it was flat ever until Irving wrote the book and perpetuated the idea.
