21 Sept 1995 Jahr - Ipperwash Crisis

Beschreibung:

The Ipperwash Crisis was an altercation over First Nations' land. This conflict was a huge factor in the creation of the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs.

The Federal government had asked the Stony Point First Nation in 1942 to surrender the remaining land for use as a military training camp. After a refusal, the government took the land under the War Measures Act, giving about $50,000 in compensation and relocated them to the Kettle Point Reserve nearby.

With many unfulfilled promises of the return of the land, protesters eventually got fed up and took over some parts of the land.

In response, the police started using helicopters and boats for surveillance. This made people antsy.

On September 6, 1995, a conflict broke out and Acting Sergeant Ken Deane shot Anthony O’Brien “Dudley” George 3 times, resulting in his death. Deane claims George was carrying a long branch that he mistook for a rifle.

Former Ontario Provincial Attorney General Charles Harnick testified that Premier Mike Harris had shouted, "I want the f---ing Indians out of the park."

In 2007, the Ontario government established the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs, seemingly influenced by the event, as it occurred after the inquiry report on the death of George had been released.

"On Thursday May 28, 2009, Ontario Aboriginal Affairs Minister Brad Duguid formally signed over control of Ipperwash Park to the Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation. The settlement was finalized on April 14, 2016. Along with a $95 million payment, the land was signed over to the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation by Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan and Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennett."
