The launch of Project Gutenberg was among the year's most notable events. For those who are unfamiliar with the website, Project Gutenberg is an international initiative to make public domain books and papers freely available online in a range of eBook and electronic forms.

It all started when Michael Hart had access to a significant amount of computing time and realized that the future of computers lay not in computation but rather in the storing, retrieving, and searching of knowledge that, at the time, was only available in libraries.

He manually typed the "Declaration of Independence" (there was no OCR at the time) and started Project Gutenberg to make information found in books broadly accessible in electronic form. In a sense, this marked the beginning of the eBook.
