He names himself 50 Cent as he saw it as a metaphor for change. He was going to change the game. He took the name after the existing gangster 50 Cent who was a stickup kid from Brooklyn. He also though 50 Cent is easy to remember and that is was broad enough to lend itself to other things.

He began to market himself by: getting a gold chain with a quarter and 5 nickels arranged like a cross, and sticker of a 50 Cent coin with his face and the phrae "In God We Trust".
