1 Jan 1923 Jahr - Arizona Deaconess Hospital opens it's doors in new location.

Beschreibung:

Description: This hospital had been relocated from an old apartment building on third Avenue, south of Van Buren to where it now stands at 10th Street and McDowell (The First Good Sam, 2011). The hospital was the brain-child of Deaconess Lulu Clifton, who originally came to Phoenix in the early 1900's to recover from tuberculosis. Her goal for the hospital was not only to provide great care to all people of the community, but also to "establish, maintain and conduct a school for the proper training of Christian women as nurses" (Shields, 1969).

Reflection: Arizona was one of the most popular places to seek recovery from the tuberculosis afflicted. It was believed that the abundant sunshine and fresh air was the cure-all for the disease and many, like Miss Clifton, did improve.
