The primary purpose of the Townshend Acts was to raise tax money in the colonies to pay the governors and judges to remain loyal and compliant to Great Britain. They also intended to create a way of enforcing compliance with trade regulations. They also wanted to punish New York for not following the Quartering Act. They wanted to set a precedent that England could tax the colonies. The colonies fought against the Townsend acts which led to the occupation of Boston by British troops in 1768. This resulted in the Boston Massacre. This is bad for me because it increases taxes and I do not elect the members of parliament so I am getting taxed by people I did not elect. Defeat for colonists!
