16 Jul 2017 Jahr - Adversity: Living in China & my first summer course

Beschreibung:

Summer course is an INTENSIVE (really needed to emphasize that) part of the year in which teachers have as much as 26 planned contact hours with students per week. This is something that I have never experienced at any level in any other part of my career. At the same time, I was adjusting to the culture shock of living in China. It wasn't hard to adjust to living in South Korea but China was a whole new beast. I struggled with culture shock for most of the year that I lived in Fuzhou and I wouldn't say that I was totally comfortable in China until I moved to Shenzhen. I've never faced this kind of adversity at any other point in my life.
I remember when I interviewed at SPCS one of the questions they asked me was "tell us about a time you overcame adversity" and I laughed at the question when it was posed. Nothing I've experienced since then can pale in comparison to the level of adversity I faced when I was adjusting to both teaching and life abroad.
