Race for the presidency between Republican Rutherford B Hayes and Democrat Samuel J Tilden. The decision of the winner came down to congress but no one knew which house should vote in because the Senate was a Republican and the House of Reps was Democratic. No one really agreed on it, as there was no clear winner. This is still seen as a success to reconstruction, because there would be new laws to help towards reconstruction.
