John M. Chivington (colorado militia leader) wanted to quell public anxiety and pave his way to be a politician.

Chief consulted with U.S. agents, who told him to settle his ppl alond Sand Creek (eastern colorado) untilthey had a treaty.

-29 of Nov= militia (own initiative) attacked the camp when the men were hunting, killing at least a hundred women and children.

the soldiers celebrated in Denver and hung body parts in the Apollo theater

result: cheyenes allied with arapahos and sioux to attack white steelemtns near south plate river. U.s. army didn't stop them well. -> fetterman massacre
