One Direction consists of 5 members, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and previous member, Zayn Malik. They all auditioned individually on a X Factor. They didn't make it through the bootcamp stage, and were going to be sent home but Simon Cowell saw something special within each of them and decided they were too talented to let go. After being called back on stage, all five boys were put into a group where they would continue on in the competiton, finishing in third.
