Hieroglyphs are based off of the Sumerian script and were developed from pictographs. The texts were written the way the pictures were facing, so if a bird was facing left to right, the text would be read left to right. Another form of writing, called Hieratic writing, which was quicker to read and write, appeared later, after Hieroglyphs had been firmly established.
