Jefferson left the Continental Congress in the fall of 1776 and was re-elected to the Virginia House of Delegates (formerly the House of Burgesses). One of the major accomplishments of his career, in his opinion, was the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, which he wrote in the late 1770s and which Virginia legislators ultimately adopted in 1786.
