The Fourteenth Amendment is ratified, granting citizenship to all persons "born or naturalized in the United States," including formerly enslaved persons. The amendment also notes that no state can “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law,” or deny any person in their state “equal protection under the laws
The 15th Amendment is ratified: Black men gain the right to vote throughout the United States
