Lincoln (republican, running mate was Hannibal Hamlin): his candidacy revived secessionist agitation, lincoln used marching clubs to rally support at campaign parades, more moderate on slavery (didn't believe in equal rights), egalitarian for white ppl which appealed to lower class and midwestern groups

John Bell (Constitutional Union Party)
Stephen A. Douglas (Northern+midwestern Democrats)
John C. Breckinridge (southern Democrats)


results: lincoln wasn't on the ballot in any Deep South state, but he won every northern and western state (except New Jersey), California, Oregon (cali and Oregon b/c ppl were mad about a duel where a proslavery Cal democrat killed an antislavery rival) and had a majority in the electoral college, showing that the republicans were smart to unite voters in the north east and midwest behind free soil. Breckinridge, then Bell, then Douglas

immediate effect: southerners thought slavery was being attacked (kept remembering Haiti) and at the least inter-State slave trade would be limited-> secessionist fever in south
