The newspaper La Estrella de Panama reprints an article from the Costa Rica newspaper «Costaricense» that editorialized that «the government was in the process of negotiating a contract which would surely realize the Atlantic railroad and bring the long awaited benefits of world communication and internal development.» The editorialist also stated that if the estimated cost of seven million pesos were several time greater, the rail road would still pay for itself by the capital and labor which it would bring to Costa Rica. The Panama Star and Herald also reported «the more sober and thoughtful among the people are opposed to it for the very good reason that the wealth and resources of the country cannot bear the burden of taxation it will be necessary to impose in order to pay the deficit of interest on the cost of construction».
